FlapThulhu and Hodappy Bird
Just when you thought it was over, the flaps are back! Well on Android that is. In all the madness of the Flappy Bird craze, there were actually a few gems that actually did rise to the top. Most notably was Madgardens “Flapthulhu”, that had refined controls, multiple game modes, an amazing art style and a level of depth and madness that only Paul is capable of.
Then came GDC, and a conversation with Touch Arcades Eli Hodapp and Madgarden, where beer may or may not have been a factor, Hodappy Bird was formed. Word on the street is Eli slipped Paul a cool $50 to make the game. Hodappy Bird is Eli’s satirical take on the flappy genre that is more a statement of the current app store climate than anything. Stacked with bit coins, pay to win mechanics and Vungle ads galore, Hodappy Bird jokingly implores everything hardcore gamers seem to hate about mobile gaming. However it also includes a “hardcore” 64 bit mode as well for all the purists out there. But in a strange twist of fate, both FlapThulhu and Hodappy Bird seem to transcend most other games of the like and just show what can result from a simple concept, a refined game developer, beer and fifty bucks.
